In this part of my journey to giving new life to an old plane I'm replacing the old worn out beacon and installing what could possibly be, in my opinion, the brightest beacon light on the market.

This video covers the installation process of the AeroLEDs VXI Lens Cover onto the Vans Wingtip.

It was finally time to convert from the OEM halogen style PAR36 taxi lights the Learjet 45 was certified with to LED. The last couple of NBAA conventions I have visited I spend some time at lighting booths. One company stood out due to their large application and competitive price plus they were made right here in Boise, ID USA. When I visited AeroLeds a few Vegas NBAA's ago, they did however not have their lights STC'd for CFR14 Part 25 aircrafts. They were working on it. They received that STC approval in 2019 but it was not until we cracked a taxi light lens and had to replace that, we decided to pull the trigger. AeroLeds offers two style lights. A Taxi light replacement with a 40 deg wide and 20 deg tall beam pattern and a landing light style with a 20 by 20 deg spread. The following video is do best articulate those lights and their beam patterns and output, as compared to the OEM which is a halogen style light with 250 watt out put. Both AeroLeds are 100 watt output. It is very difficult to correctly illustrate light patterns and intensity as our eyes also has a automatic white balance. That being the case I have done the best I can to capture the beam patterns and luminosity with the Canon 7D and the 35mm EF1:1.4 lens at 1.4 aperture and 1/200 fixed shutter speed on all the pictures, the GoPro Hero 8 capturing 4K video, and the Samsung Galaxy S-22 Ultra. This should give you a good idea of what you can expect.
As far as the STC applicability, I will share what we did WRT weight and balance.
CFR14 Part 43 Appendix A section C notes that an aircraft owner or operator are allowed to perform preventative maintenance. This includes light bulb exchange. We did a FAA form 337.
AC 43.13-1B gives direction on maintenance and in chapter 10 it defines what weight and balance change necessitates are calculation of the aircraft CG. In our case (fixed wing aircraft between 5000 and 50000 pounds) the threshold is 4 pounds or a change of more than 0.05% MAC. We found that in our case it was a weight change of 8 ounce total and 0.01% MAC which was well within those limits. You need to choose what is best for you and if you feel that a FAA form 337 is needed then that is what you should do.

Debriefing this night flight in the Van’s Aircraft RV-14 was a lot easier using the visualization and quantifiable stats built-in with CloudAhoy and using the #CloudAhoyScore to compare each pattern, approach, and landing. I was a bit loose in the pattern while getting used to #nightflying at first, but tightened up my patterns as time went on. We also investigated an intriguing Radio Failure on a Cessna 172 that was ultimately determined to be caused by a bad LED nav light.

We continue our huge cross country, cross continent flying adventure from Wisconsin to Alaska in our Cessna 172. Our instrument panel was just completely redone, and now we’re taking it home to our flight school. The journey ahead is still long.

With some rest and food in our bellies, we set out on a huge day ahead. Our flying progress so far has been slow. But, today we want to make up for that.

Already, in the previous episode, we flew our Cessna 172 across the Canadian border. That’s always a stressful event. Now we’re cleared to go on!

Immediately, this is going to be a beautiful sunset flight. And, we’re flying IFR. Our new instrument panel is beyond capable thanks to the awesome avionics upgrades, making things incredibly simple for us.

Canadian ATC is great to us, and the procedures are a lot like flying in the FAA system.

Tonight is going to be all about Human Factors and Fuel Endurance. We are planning to push into the night, but want to make sure we pass the “IM SAFE” Checklist. Big on our list, is our Fatigue and External Pressures. As pilots, we really have to watch out for ourselves and make sure we’re in top flying condition.

Daniel got extra rest, but I’m for sure tired. So I take little naps here and there.

Fuel endurance is also huge. We’ve got some major new upgrades that help. Namely, the CiES Fuel Senders that give us an incredibly accurate reading on our fuel levels. Such a huge thing for peace of mind.

Our day of flying is absolutely massive. 11 hours, 22 minutes, 894 nautical miles. That’s got to be a single day record for me!

AC 43.13-1B gives direction on maintenance and in chapter 10 it defines what weight and balance change necessitates are calculation of the aircraft CG. In our case (fixed wing aircraft between 5000 and 50000 pounds) the threshold is 4 pounds or a change of more than 0.05% MAC. We found that in our case it was a weight change of 8 ounce total and 0.01% MAC which was well within those limits. You need to choose what is best for you and if you feel that a FAA form 337 is needed then that is what you should do.

Aero pulsars are built better with better seals, clearly can see that just by holding them. They win with ease of install over Whelen for sure. They did get warm quick but during a flight i do not believe you would get this. Frustrating enought the Whelen glass got cloudy after the first use....wild. This made me overall disapointed as i thought the Whelens would at-least perform well and be a clean install...i mean Citations use whelen for nav/strobe. I think whelen is on to something and will continue to improve the experimental side of the house...but for right now AEROLEDS is the way i am going, sending the others back to aircraft spruce today.

It was finally time to convert from the OEM halogen style PAR36 taxi lights the Learjet 45 was certified with to LED. The last couple of NBAA conventions I have visited I spend some time at lighting booths. One company stood out due to their large application and competitive price plus they were made right here in Boise, ID USA. When I visited AeroLeds a few Vegas NBAA's ago, they did however not have their lights STC'd for CFR14 Part 25 aircrafts. They were working on it. They received that STC approval in 2019 but it was not until we cracked a taxi light lens and had to replace that, we decided to pull the trigger. AeroLeds offers two style lights. A Taxi light replacement with a 40 deg wide and 20 deg tall beam pattern and a landing light style with a 20 by 20 deg spread. The following video is do best articulate those lights and their beam patterns and output, as compared to the OEM which is a halogen style light with 250 watt out put. Both AeroLeds are 100 watt output. It is very difficult to correctly illustrate light patterns and intensity as our eyes also has a automatic white balance. That being the case I have done the best I can to capture the beam patterns and luminosity with the Canon 7D and the 35mm EF1:1.4 lens at 1.4 aperture and 1/200 fixed shutter speed on all the pictures, the GoPro Hero 8 capturing 4K video, and the Samsung Galaxy S-22 Ultra. This should give you a good idea of what you can expect.
As far as the STC applicability, I will share what we did WRT weight and balance.
CFR14 Part 43 Appendix A section C notes that an aircraft owner or operator are allowed to perform preventative maintenance. This includes light bulb exchange. We did a FAA form 337.

We continue our huge cross country, cross continent flying adventure from Wisconsin to Alaska in our Cessna 172. Our instrument panel was just completely redone, and now we’re taking it home to our flight school. The journey ahead is still long.

With some rest and food in our bellies, we set out on a huge day ahead. Our flying progress so far has been slow. But, today we want to make up for that.

Already, in the previous episode, we flew our Cessna 172 across the Canadian border. That’s always a stressful event. Now we’re cleared to go on!

Immediately, this is going to be a beautiful sunset flight. And, we’re flying IFR. Our new instrument panel is beyond capable thanks to the awesome avionics upgrades, making things incredibly simple for us.

Canadian ATC is great to us, and the procedures are a lot like flying in the FAA system.

Tonight is going to be all about Human Factors and Fuel Endurance. We are planning to push into the night, but want to make sure we pass the “IM SAFE” Checklist. Big on our list, is our Fatigue and External Pressures. As pilots, we really have to watch out for ourselves and make sure we’re in top flying condition.

Daniel got extra rest, but I’m for sure tired. So I take little naps here and there.

Fuel endurance is also huge. We’ve got some major new upgrades that help. Namely, the CiES Fuel Senders that give us an incredibly accurate reading on our fuel levels. Such a huge thing for peace of mind.

Our day of flying is absolutely massive. 11 hours, 22 minutes, 894 nautical miles. That’s got to be a single day record for me!

Just brought the airplane back from the shop today with new paint, a new interior, and a new tail number. The avionics are now complete and the last of the AeroLeds are now in place. The folks on the ground watching my arrival said they saw me more than 10 miles out and it was either my airplane or a B747.



All outside lights are now AeroLEDs. The landing light is a Sunspot 46X with pulse. The beacon on top of the rudder as well as the one on the belly is the Sunbeacon II. The strobes are the Pulsar NSPs, which have position, navigation, and strobe lights. There is also a TailBeacon on the top rear of the rudder.

As a Van’s Aircraft RV-14 builder, I had a difficult time finding a glare shield that fit so I decided to make my own. With the help of my sister, who has been sewing with leather for over 30 years and has sewn products that are utilized in Boeing flight decks, we came up with a design and prototype. We liked how it made the cockpit look professional and finished so we decided to produce a few glare shields for the Van’s Aircraft RV-14 fleet. Starting with prototypes to test on some flying Van’s Aircraft R-14s, we solicited feedback from pilots and implemented their suggestions, including a few ideas from Flight Chops. Three takeoffs/landings testing out my new lighting systems for the first time. Very impressive to say the least. Notice on my second landing I have the lights in recognition mode (wig wag) then switch them to "taxi" position once I am on the ground. Lux AP used to evaluate and give us a base line number to compare each light with.

AERO Pulsar--- BEST 6300
Whelen micro3-- BEST 3900

Conclusion: AERO PULSAR
Aero pulsars are built better with better seals, clearly can see that just by holding them. They win with ease of install over Whelen for sure. They did get warm quick but during a flight i do not believe you would get this. Frustrating enought the Whelen glass got cloudy after the first use....wild. This made me overall disapointed as i thought the Whelens would at-least perform well and be a clean install...i mean Citations use whelen for nav/strobe. I think whelen is on to something and will continue to improve the experimental side of the house...but for right now AEROLEDS is the way i am going, sending the others back to aircraft spruce today.

From Sun 'n Fun 2024, AeroLEDs' Ryan Edmark goes into detail about the new wingtips for Van's RVs that incorporate landing and taxi lights, red and green nav lights, strobe lights and more.
